One of the earliest promotional images for the Urusei Yatsura anime.

This is an anime adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi's hit manga that was a hot topic among young readers shortly before Dr. Slump. [1] The main character, Ataru Moroboshi, has become the unluckiest boy in Japan after a strange monk named Sakuranbo declares that "your face has an unlucky look to it." The monk follows him home, and Lum-chan, an oni-like space invader, attacks Ataru and forces herself on him as his wife! To make matters worse, Lum-chan is cute and glamorous. Ataru, who loves women, can't choose between girls and develops a strange love triangle with Lum and his girlfriend, Shinobu. Space invaders and monsters begin to appear around Ataru. Thanks to them, the Moroboshi family becomes the center of attention and the laughing stock of Japan. Ataru's parents cannot help but be saddened by their son's stupidity. Whether it is because of his unlucky face or his name, Ataru Moroboshi is the cause of all the misfortune in the world, and his many outlandish incidents are a delight to watch. The hilarious gag anime Urusei Yatsura is currently under production at Kitty Enterprises for an October broadcast. [2] A record production of the theme song is also underway at the same time! [3]

Footnotes
  • [1] Both Dr. Slump and Urusei Yatsura were popular manga at the time and started as anime at roughly the same time. Both series ran as an hour long block with Dr. Slump at 7:00 pm and Urusei Yatsura at 7:30 on Wednesday nights.
  • [2] This issue of My Anime has a September cover date, which means it was released in August, roughly two months before Urusei Yatsura's television debut on October 14th.
  • [3] Kitty Enterprises began as a record company, so for them to be producing a theme song record was a bit of a novelty for the time, but would some become ubiquitous across the anime industry. For more information on Kitty Enterprises, which would later become Kitty Films, please see our article.
