59: 捨童子の家
Sutedouji no ie
(Home For Foundlings)
Mao recalls his youth in the distant past and how he and two of his young friends came across the body of a badly mangled man. The boys return to the home of another master, Sengoku, where they report the successful kill via cursing of the man they discovered. A tanned young man spies Mao and cheerfully greets him, an acquaintence named Daigo who lived at the disgarded boys home, an orphanage where parentless children were looked after. Mao recalls afternoons spent talking with Daigo, the affable older boy who was a master at manipulating the earth. Mao explains to Nanako that when the boys at the orphanage reached six or seven they were taken into a field at night and asked what they saw. If they described the spirits that moved through the field then they were given better food and a proper kimono as their training then began. Years later Mao watched as Daigo's earthen golem was able to defeat that of a rival master, making the man look trivial in the process. As Mao ponders his past an elderly man pulling a cart carrying a young woman with a braid curses his luck and wonders if he did not follow his teacher's technique properly causing the men he mended to die.

60: 土薬
Tsuchi kusuri
(Earth Medicine)
A distraught mother brings her injured son, Shobo, to the elderly doctor. The man seems kindly and refuses to take any money for his efforts. Mixing earth and soil in a pestle he smears it on the little boys wounded leg and miraculously the repairs it. Some time later Shobo is outside playing with his friends when his leg gives way as Mao, Nanoka and Otoya watch. Mao hurries over and offers to help when the boy's leg refuses to operate and quickly realizes that the boy's life is in danger as he unwraps the bandages and sees his leg covered in soil. Mao immediately realizes that some sort of onmyodo has gone awry and begins trying to treat the boy before the soil can spread. With the boy's life saved Mao and Nanoka are quickly able to track down the doctor responsible- Domon. Upon arriving in Domon's office they are surprised to find an elderly man and Mao immediately realizes he is not one of the earthen onmyodo practicioners from his past. Mao demands to know how the man learned his techniques and Domon explains that years ago his wife was injured and an anonymous passerby healed her using the earthen technique. Before departing he showed knead and apply the soil. However as the years have passed his technique has lessened and his own wife's illness has also progressed leaving him unable to treat her. Soon his wife, Yae, appears. She is wide-eyed and bizarre in her behavior. Mao asks if he can examine her, telling Domon that he is an onmyoji practicioner like the man who taught him the earthen medicine techniques. Domon begins to share his past with Mao and Nanoka- thirty years ago while he was studying to become a doctor his wife was attacked by an obsessed customer at a bar. Domon hurried to her side and found her nearly decapitated. A mysterious figure happened by and applied soil to the gaping hole and the next day Yae awoke once more. However as the years have passed the soil in her neck has started to dry out and crack, just like what has happened with the patients Domon has treated with the techniques he was taught by the stranger. As Mao chastises Domon for the deaths he is responsible for a voice calls to him from behind- a young woman with white hair that looks remarkably like the silouette in Domon's memory, the one who taught him his art thirty years ago.

Chapter
61: 夏野
Natsuno
(Natsuno)
The white haired woman stands in the doorway as Domon rises to speak to her, immediately confirming that she is the woman who taught him to use earth to heal the sick. Domon pleads with her to go and see his wife and when she does she confirms the woman died "long ago" and has hung on simply to help her husband. Touching the soil on Yae's throat, her head falls off and she dies. Stepping outside the group leaves Domon behind. When Nanoka mentions worrying about leaving the old man alone after his wife just died the white-haired girl explains that he too has already succumed to the soil and died as well. In the past Mao recalls Daigo working with another earth-user, the young woman who is standing before them now- Natsuno. Daigo explained that Natsuno is even more talened than he is, and she teasingly tells Mao that Daigo would be just as talented if he worked harder. Mao asks if she was invited to the five-sided room. She is coy in her response asking if Mao wonders if Daigo could have been invited to the room. Mao recalls hearing Sana's voice one day and spying her embracing Daigo. Hidden, he watched as Sana stroked Daigo's face and told him he had beautiful eyes. Natsuno goes on to explain that Daigo and Sana used to meet in private due to the jealousy others already had for him due to his exceptional skills. Also they wished to avoid Sana's father, the master, knowing about their meetings. Natsuno abruptly comments that Mao had feelings for Sana in those days as well. Natsuno takes her leave saying she will see Mao again, but Nanoka asks Mao again about the five-sided room. Mao explains that after some of his fellow pupils were called to the room the most powerful practioners died mysteriously. Daigo was the first student to be murdered after the meeting.

Chapter
62: 大五の死
Daigo no shi
(Daigo's Death)
Mao thinks back to when it was announced he would inherit the leadership of the Goko Clan and how Sana dutifully said that she would marry him. Mao silently pondered her agreeing to this despite knowing her feelings for Daigo. When he went to speak to him, Daigo apologized for ever encouraging Mao to join the Goko Clan. He explained how wonderful he thought it would be, but the opposite has turned out to be true. The next morning Daigo was murdered, a crater was found in the earth next to his foot. Mao recalls seeing Hyakka trembling as he came upon the body and now realizes what must have happened- someone from the five-sided room presumed Daigo was one of the other contenders to inherit should Mao be successfully killed. Therefore they struck first, killing Daigo out of the mere presumption he was involved in the assassination assignment. Mao recalls that was the first time he saw Sana cry. In the days that followed more assassinations took place. Nanoka asks about Sana, wondering about how she could have been described as so kind and gentle, while at the same time having curses drawn out of her and capable of living despite Byoki's insistance that she is dead. Mao tells Nanoka he simply wants to know how Sana can still be alive and why she is working with Shiranui. He goes on to say if he can save her, then he'd like to. Meanwhile Kamon is at sea again, riding with fishermen as he searched for Shiranui's hidden temple. The fishermen find their nets fouled with thick strands of black hair as their boat glides over the submerged temple deep below the sea. Beniko, Kamon's shinigami asks him if he will kill Shiranui when he finds him. Kamon stares off into the distance and replies that he will but he has a lot of questions for him first.

Chapter
63: 魂おろし
Tama oroshi
(The Seance)
Mao, Otoya and Nanoka arrive at a splendid mansion where Beniko waits to greet them. Showing them inside they find Kamon inside dressed in his priestly robes along with two young girls- the true owners of the home who Kamon has hypnotized into allowing him to stay there. Mao asks Kamon if he was able to locate Shiranui's base. Kamon confirms he did, but it is deeply placed at the bottom of the sea. However he shows Mao and the others a bucket of the black hair that loomed in the seas around Shiranui's temple. Mao and Kamon begin a ritual they call "soul removal" which Nanoka asks Otoya if there is any similarity to necromancy. He confirms it is similar as the hair rises and soon and suddenly a ghostly apparition appears. It is Masago, the water onmyodo from the Heian Era that was Shiranui's superior. Suddenly she tries to hug Kamon before fading away. Kamon begins to explain. He reminds the others that the night that the Goko Clan's temple was attacked and burned by Byoki he was not present- he was meeting a woman. He reveals that that was supposed to have been Masago who invited him to meet at the seaside. When he arrived however she was not there. Kamon said he never saw her again after that but has tried to find out what became of her. Did she flee from the temple just as she had warned Mao to do when they first met? Or was she called into the five-sided temple where she had to make the same vow to kill Mao just as Kamon and Hyakka were? Kamon says that he hopes she escaped and lived anonymously somewhere until she died. Nanoka sits quietly, excited to discover that Kamon obviously had feelings for Masago. Elsewhere at the bottom of the sea Shiranui sends more hair out beyond the barrier protecting his temple. His shikigami report that their move from Kyoto has caused things to break down but Shiranui seems disinterested. Instead he stares out to a figure trapped in the coral outside his temple. It is the source of the shedding hair- Masago.

Chapter
64: 海底の社
Kaidei no yashiro
(The Undersea Shrine)
Kamon and Mao float in a small boat over the submerged temple, staring intently as Kamon sends roots down to try and gain access, however once they near they temple they are repelled by a domed barrier that protects the complex. As Otoya and Nanoka observe from the safety of the seashore, Natsuno suddenly appears, commenting on their efforts at sea. It seems Mao had sent her a message asking if she might be able to lend them her aid in penetrating the barrier. However when Natsuno seems Kamon she is concerned that he may wish to murder her as she is aware of the Five-Sided Temple. It seems that she was another of those called to the structure that night. When Nanoka asks Mao if she is sure it is alright that Kamon and Natsuno be around one another, Mao said he did not think it would be an issue because Natsuno was not a factor in the succession issues of the clan in the past. Natsuno tells Kamon that she will help, but warns him not to snoop into her past any further. Using her earthen powers Natsuno summons a massive whale-creature with arms and legs and asks but explains she will need Nanoka's help. She can tell Nanoka is also a earth-tuned individual and can help her insure the clay vessel does not come apart as they dive down into the ocean. Mao and Kamon try to disuade Nanoka of coming into such a dangerous place, but she insists on helping. Everyone climbs into the mouth of the whale-like clay creature and Nanoka and Natsuno clutch a beaded necklace to try and keep their makeshift vessel held together. Down the creature dives and throws itself against the barrier protecting the underwater temple. As they try to press through the barrier Kamon again suggests he does not trust Natsuno. Before he can explain further the whale's mouth pushes through and spits everyone out inside of the barrier, but as soon as they leap into the fray a black aura attacks.

Chapter
65: 五色堂の輪
Goshikidou no wa
(Bound to the Wheel of Fate)
Mao and Kamon break into the underwater temple of Shiranui as they are attacked by the black aura. Battering it away they push on towards Shiranui. Once they reach him Kamon demands to know what this has to do with Masago. Shiranui scoffs, commenting that he must have been able to figure out she was involved thanks to her hair. Shiranui coldly tells Kamon that Masago is dead. That she died 900 years ago. However when Kamon asks if Shiranui murdered her he becomes quiet, thinking back to the Heian Era long, long ago. Shiranui tells them that their master spoke to him one day and told him to keep an eye on Masago. The master told him that no matter she must not be allowed to leave the compound. Shiranui watches her after Daigo was cursed to death and one night finds her trying to sneak away. Shiranui confronted her, asking her where she was going. Suddenly Masago turns to him and tells him the truth- she was called to the Five Color Shrine and told to kill Mao. Shiranui was stunned as she explained that she simply cannot murder Mao as she was instructed to. Suddenly ayakashi began to swarm around Masago and Shiranui and she was killed. A disembodied voice then told Shiranui that he must take Masago's place in the five-sided temple and fulfill the task she failed at- killing Mao. Initially Shiranui believed he would be killed, but he said from that day forward he lived on as he is now. Suddenly Shiranui flies into a rage. He demands that Kamon tell him if he was planning on running away with Masago and tells him that Kamon is to blame for her death. Having had enough of Kamon and Mao, Shiranui begins to break the temple apart, deciding he will drown them all at the bottom of the sea. As the water begins to seep in through cracks in the ceiling and wall the black aura begins to wrap itself around Mao again.

Chapter
66: 邪気の中
Jyaki no naka
(Within the Evil Aura)
As the temple floods with water Mao and Kamon races to vanquish Shiranui before they drown. As Mao rushes towards him he realizes the miasma is not coming from the water-user, instead it seems to be emanating from somewhere behind him. As Kamon nearly reaches Shiranui a column of coral erupts from the ground, wrapping itself around Kamon and trapping him inside. As he struggles to breathe he thinks about the last days of Masago and how she whispered to him to meet her at their usual place that final, fateful night. He recalls wondering what she would do if she knew he had been invited to the Five-Color Temple, and how she might kill him if she too were a there that night. Kamon even recalls the weak attempts of others to curse him to death as his unseen opponents suspected that he been one of the five there that night. As his consciousness fades Shiranui screams at him that is is his fault that Masago died. Mao struggles to break into the coral cocoon that Kamon is trapped within, but cannot pierce it with his sword. Suddenly the black miasma surrounds him and within he can see the beady eyes of ayakashi preparing to devour him, Mao slices through them as Shiranui taunts him, telling him that the time he wastes slaying them will result in Kamon's death. Meanwhile Natsuno, Otoya and Nanoha are sheltering inside the clay whale as the miasma continues to attack its outer husk. Natsuno asks Nanoha if she can swim which Nanoka confesses that because she was so weak she only ever learned to dog paddle about ten meters. With no other choice they have to abandon the clay vessel and swim out into the submerged temple. Natsuno slices a path through the water and ahead they see the black void that is generating the miasma- with Yurako in the center.

Chapter
67: 加護
Kago
(Protection)
Kamon is quickly fading, his thoughts lost in the past and recollecting how Shiranui took Masago's place in the Five-Colored Temple. As his air begins to run out inside the coral prison he is trapped in he sees black strands of hair weaving around his hand and then the spirit of Masago appears. She kisses him, breathing for him for a moment and giving him enough strength to slice through his prison. Nanoka and Natsuno press onward into the interior of the collapsing temple as they encounter the black miasma that Nanoka knows came from Yurako's mouth. As Natsuno cuts a path for them to rejoin Mao, Kamon manages to free himself, revealing to Shiranui that Masago's soul has saved him in his hour of need. Kamon leaps free and angrily punches Shiranui in the face, knocking him to the floor. He coldly asks why Shiranui had Masago's hair. As Shiranui glares back at Kamon more and more miasma begins to circle behind him. Nanoka tells Mao that this black aura is from Yurako and Mao is stunned that Sana might be here in the collapsing temple. Suddenly Natsuno points out that she too is familiar with this wicked energy- she felt it the night Sana was murdered centuries ago.

Chapter
68: 朽ちない亡骸
Kuchinai nakigara
(The Undying Corpse)
Mao is shocked to see Sana before him in the guise of Yurako. Immediately the veiled woman knocks Natsuno away as she is trying to explain the black aura that she witnessed the night of Sana's death. Mao tries to rush toward Sana but Nanoka stops him, pointing out that she has clearly sided with Shiranui. The water-user summons a whirlpool that sweeps him away when Kamon tries to attack him once again. The temple has suffered its final blow and everything now collapses as the sea rushes in. Sana makes a final attempt to grab Mao but he slices away the black tendrils as they approach him and swims over to Nanoka. Kamon watches as Shiranui escapes as well, cursing his bad luck. As he escapes however Shiranui carts away the preserved corpse of Masago. Kamon, Mao and Nanoka swim to shore and ponder why Shiranui would have Masago's corpse after so many centuries. Equally puzzling was the perfect condition of the her deceased body which looked just as it did centuries ago. Mao suggests that the same thing that has kept the others who were summoned to the Five-Color Temple forever young has likely also kept Masago's corpse from decomposing. Then Natsuno and Otoya arrive from the ocean. The little shikigami explains that Natsuno rescued him from the sea, earning an apology from Nanoka for abandoning him in the wake of the temple collapsing. Kamon asks Natsuno again about what she saw the night Sana died and she says she saw something seize Sana's heart that night.
